The Burton Multi-Cultural Oral
History Project
Supported by the Heritage
Lottery Fund.
About The Project
East Staffordshire Racial Equality Council in association with Heritage Lottery Fund is pleased to develop the Burton Multi-Cultural Oral-History project. This exciting project will recognise, celebrate, capture and preserve the experiences of first generation migrants’ journey from the Asian sub-continent and the Caribbean to the United Kingdom.
Aim The project aims to:
· Preserve the experiences of the first generation migrants
· Safeguard multi-cultural history for future generations.
· Build bonds between young and older generations
Project Outcome
The project will be looking to produce a DVD, pamphlets and leaflets, which will include pictures, newspaper clippings, film clips, and diary entries from participants. The DVD will be available to schools, libraries, voluntary organisations and the Local Records Office.
The project will conduct interviews with first generation migrants of Asian and African-Caribbean heritage in Burton upon Trent. We are interested in engaging the first generation migrants who came to the UK in and around the 1950s and 1960s.
The project will look to concentrate on the practical details of the participants’ experience of migration to the UK, such as their journey, finding home, employment, integrating socially, how they practiced religious and cultural beliefs, finding acceptable food and effect on family life. Participants will be asked about their new life in the UK and how life for them has changed since the early years of settling in the United Kingdom.
Who Will Benefit?
· Senior Citizens: The senior citizens who will participate in this project will understand the importance of their heritage and the importance of sharing it with others in order to safeguard it.
· Young Adults: The project will involve the use of volunteers, preferably between the ages of 14-25, to assist the project co-ordinator. This will benefit any young adult who wishes to do volunteer work in order to compliment their CVs and UCAS applications. The young adults would also be working with members of BME communities, therefore, the project will encourage social interaction, empathy and understanding.
· Local Schools: The DVD will be distributed to local schools for them to use for educational purposes. The DVD will inform children about the rich heritage that exists in Burton.
· The Community: This project will increase greater understanding of different cultures, greater tolerance, greater harmony and encourage a higher degree of social integration. The project will also give an insight into aspects of the rich social history of Burton.
· The Society: Society will benefit because the project will lead to better understanding and improved community cohesion as the project will educate society about migration and what they contribute.
