What is the Intermix Project?

Intermix is a new and dynamic initiative by East Staffordshire Racial Equality Council. The project recognises the diversity of different cultures, and works in partnership with school and parents to celebrate and raise the awareness of children from multi-heritage backgrounds.

A significant number of families in Burton are now of a multi-heritage background, giving rise to a variety of challenges that face parents and teachers. The issues around diversity and racial identity are complex and require sensitivity and understanding on how to address these needs.

In many cases these challenges are subliminal and at worse unspoken!

The repercussions of this could be detrimental and may lead to:

• Underachievment at school
• Low self esteem
• Identity issues
• Exclusion
• Isolation
• Bullying

Aims and Objectives

Intermix aims to raise awareness and celebrate the unique needs and aspirations of multi-heritage children by offering support, information and advice to parents, teachers and caregivers of children of multi-heritage families through the following:

• Individual/ group work on children's positive identity
• Direct work with parents to raise their racial/ cultural awareness
• Sharing knowledge and experience with teachers through training and workshops
• A wider recognition of diversity via the celebration of cultural events, workshops and positive role models.

Education

Intermix seeks to establish strong links with schools in Burton and to help develop resources and strategies for meeting the educational and emotional needs of multi-heritage children by:

• Providing positive role models and delivering workshops
• Providing on going support and training for the staff

Parents

With the unfortunate break up of families and constant peer pressure, some children do confess to being forced to live in two cultures simultaneously.

Intermix recognises the challenges that parents of multi-heritage children may face. To address these concerns Intermix has developed culturally appropriate services that will:

• Support parents to develop a positive identity in their children
• Encourage a consistent approach with parents and teachers to address mixed-heritage issues
• Assist parents to encourage their children to participate in activities that celebrate their racial origins
• Undertake group work with young people to express their ideas and feelings, develop their self-esteem and build confidence
